Programs & Scholarships

VFW Post 9644 is dedicated to promoting patriotism and investing in our future generation. If you are a democracy-loving high school student interested in a $35,000 college scholarship or a patriotic middle school student interested in winning $5,000, these scholarships may be for you.

We offer the following programs for local youth:

Voice of Democracy - 2024/2025

Established in 1947, our Voice of Democracy audio-essay program offers high school students a remarkable platform to articulate their thoughts on democratic and patriotic themes through recorded essays. The national champion is awarded a $35,000 scholarship directly for their education at an American university, college, or vocational/technical institution.

Each year, approximately 25,000 students in grades nine through twelve participate from all corners of the nation, vying for a portion of over $1 million in educational scholarships provided by the program. We seek local students who meet the criteria and aspire to claim prizes at the Post, District, State, and National levels!

The 2024-25 theme is:

"Is America Today Our Forefathers' Vision?"

Patriot's Pen - 2024/2025

Every year, approximately 68,800 students in sixth through eighth grades participate in the VFW's Patriot's Pen youth essay contest, aiming to secure a portion of nearly $1 million in state and national awards. State first-place winners are guaranteed a minimum of $500 at the national level, while the national champion earns an impressive $5,000!

This essay competition inspires young minds to explore American history and their own contemporary experiences within American society. Participants craft a 300- to 400-word essay, sharing their perspectives on a patriotic theme selected by the VFW Commander-in-Chief.

The 2024-25 theme is:

"My Voice in America's Democracy?"
